They are wrong.
The Fool is not Card 1 in the Tarot — it is Card 0. The void before creation. The infinite potential before anything manifests. The Fool is the soul before it enters the world — and again after it has mastered it. This is the most spiritually advanced card in the entire deck.

Symbolism in The Fool Card
- The cliff’s edge: Not danger — the threshold between the known and the infinite. Every new chapter requires stepping off a familiar edge.
- The white flower: Purity of intention. The Fool acts from innocence, not from strategy.
- The small bag: The Fool travels light — carrying only the wisdom of all past lifetimes, nothing extraneous.
- The dog: The instinct and lower self, warning of the material world’s concerns. The Fool acknowledges the warning — and leaps anyway.
- The sun: Divine light, consciousness, the higher self that illuminates the path forward.
- Looking upward: The Fool trusts the Universe more than the evidence of the physical world.
The Fool Upright — What It Means
When The Fool appears upright in a reading, it carries one of the most energising messages in the Tarot: The time to begin is now.

A new relationship is beginning — or an existing one is entering a fresh, playful chapter. The Fool in love readings says: let go of past heartbreak and approach this with an open heart. The Fool Reversed — Shadow and Lessons
Reversed, The Fool warns against:
- Recklessness without wisdom — jumping without any preparation or awareness of consequences
- Spiritual bypassing — using “trust the Universe” as an excuse to avoid responsibility
- Fear of beginning — overthinking, perfectionism, and never taking the leap at all
- Naivety in a situation — being taken advantage of by someone whose motives are not pure
The Fool reversed asks: Are you leaping too wildly, or refusing to leap at all? Either extreme requires correction.

The entire Tarot tells the story of The Fool’s journey — beginning at 0 and moving through every major archetype until reaching The World (card 21). The Fool encounters the Magician (who shows what is possible), the High Priestess (who teaches intuition), the Emperor (who builds structure), and so on.
