Shadow Work: How to Heal the Parts of Yourself You Have Been Hiding

Inner Healing

Shadow Work

The Parts of You That You Buried Are the Parts That Hold Your Greatest Power

Carl Jung coined the term shadow to describe the unconscious part of the psyche — everything you have buried, suppressed, denied, or been ashamed of since childhood. Your shadow is not inherently dark. It is simply the parts of you that were told, at some point, that they were too much, not enough, wrong, bad, or unacceptable.

Shadow work is the practice of turning toward those parts instead of away from them. It is one of the most challenging — and most transformative — practices available for personal and spiritual growth.

Why Your Shadow Controls Your Life

What you do not integrate, you project. Your shadow expresses itself in:

  • Intense, irrational reactions to other people’s behaviour (the things that enrage or deeply wound you about others are usually mirrors of your own shadow)
  • Self-sabotage — especially in areas where you consciously want success but unconsciously believe you do not deserve it
  • Relationship patterns that repeat — the same type of person, the same dynamic, the same ending
  • Chronic negative emotions — shame, rage, jealousy, resentment — that do not resolve through surface-level positive thinking

Shadow Work Practices

1. The Trigger Journal: When you have a strong emotional reaction — anger, jealousy, shame — write it down without editing. Then ask: “What part of me does this trigger remind me of? What belief does this activate?”
2. Dialogue With Your Shadow: In your journal, write a question to your shadow — the part of you that self-sabotages, or that carries shame around a specific topic. Let it answer. The response may surprise you.
3. Inner Child Work: Most shadow material originates in childhood. Visualise yourself at the age when the wounding happened. Speak to that child: “I see you. I love you. You were not wrong for feeling what you felt.”
4. Astrology of the Shadow: Your 12th house, Pluto placement, and South Node reveal where your shadow material is most concentrated. A chart reading illuminates exactly where your deepest healing work lives.
